Supporting Optimal Kidney Function Is Super Important
The kidneys are one of our body’s vital organs, which means that they are imperative for our survival. They are also one of the most important cleansing and detoxification organs. They are 2 bean-shaped organs that are located just below the rib cage on each side of the spine.
The kidneys have many key functions, some of which include:
- Cleansing and filtering the blood of metabolic waste (such as urea and creatinine) and toxins
- Maintaining the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance
- Producing hormones that help to stimulate red blood cell production and maintain stable blood pressure
- Activating vitamin D so that it is usable by the body
When the kidneys aren’t functioning properly, these key physiological functions are impacted, which has a negative impact on one’s health.
Several causes of poor kidney function include:
- Exposure to excess toxins such as heavy metals and environmental toxins such as mold
- Regularly consuming excess sugar
- Diabetes
- Chronic stress
- High blood pressure
- Expressive clinically significant gene variants
- Experiencing recurring lower urinary tract/bladder infections which can spread to the kidneys/upper urinary tract and cause kidney infection
- More
Even aside from these possible causes of poor kidney function, we are all exposed to toxins that the kidneys help to eliminate from the body on a daily basis. These can include air pollutants, synthetic chemicals in plastics, building materials, and cleaning products that are used in most public places, pesticides on produce, and more.
Over time, this can be taxing on the detox organs so it is helpful to ensure that you are nurturing and supporting these organs.
Symptoms of Poor Kidney Function
When the kidneys aren’t functioning properly, the following symptoms may arise:
- Dark urine
- Mid to lower back pain
- Kidney stones
- Low vitamin D levels
- Low calcium levels (this is because activated vitamin D is needed for successful calcium absorption in the gut and proper kidney function is required to activate vitamin D)
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Chronic fatigue
- Low appetite
- Difficulty sleeping
- Increased or decreased urination
- Fluid retention throughout the body resulting in swelling
- Difficulty concentrating
- Shortness of breath
- Muscle weakness and cramping
- More
Natural Ways to Support Optimal Kidney Function
There are several ways to naturally nurture and support the kidneys which include:
- Balanced Protein Intake
Good quality proteins are an excellent addition to a healthy eating plan. It is all about balance, however, and it is key to make sure that protein intake doesn’t occur in excess.
As part of normal protein metabolism within the body, toxic waste byproducts such as ammonia are produced, which must be eliminated from the body by the kidneys as part of the urea cycle.
If an excess of protein is consumed over a period time, this can become taxing on the kidneys.
- Drinking Enough Clean Water
Drinking plenty of clean, filtered water is imperative for optimal kidney function. This is because optimal water intake helps to support the kidneys’ ability to remove waste from the blood via the production of urine.
Staying hydrated also helps to support optimal blood flow to the kidneys.
It is very important to make sure your water is clean and free of water contaminants such as heavy metals, fluoride, and more. These contaminants can have a negative effect on kidney health.
This portable water filter system is affordable and of exceptional quality. It filters over 99.99% of over 200 water contaminants and is available in several different sizes to suit your unique needs.
- Healthy, Low Sugar Eating Plan
Food is medicine and one of the most fundamental ways to support your health is through a healthy, whole food diet.
Each of our diets will differ depending on unique bioindividual factors, however there are some keys to what constitutes a “healthy diet” that most people can follow.
These include:
-
- Plenty of fresh, whole foods including an array of produce, good quality fats, and good quality proteins
- Low amounts of processed foods
- Low sugar
Sugar is taxing on the body for a variety of reasons, including its potentially taxing effect on the kidneys. As mentioned above, excess sugar consumption can lead to poor kidney function so it is key to keep sugar to a minimum.
- Top Quality Kidney Support Supplements
Superior quality supplements are an excellent way to naturally support the body in a plethora of ways. Kidney support supplements can be used to provide the kidneys with specific nutrients that help to improve their function.

Thorne Curcumin Phytosome
Thorne is another stellar line of supplements that provide a wide range of nutritional supports for many different health and healing purposes.
Throne Curcumin Phytosome is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant supplement that can help to protect the kidneys and other organs throughout the body.
This particular curcumin supplement is the most clinically studied curcumin on the market and has demonstrated a 29-times greater absorption rate than any other curcumin product. The curcumin in this supplement is bound to phospholipids which provides superior absorption and bioavailability.
Curcumin is the active compound found in turmeric root that gives it its exceptional anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Inflammation is a normal immune response, however it becomes a problem when it is chronic.
Chronic inflammation can result from exposure to toxins, chronic stress, and more and it can affect any organ or system in the body depending on the case.
When the kidneys become chronically inflamed, their function will suffer. Utilizing powerful natural anti-inflammatories such as curcumin is a great way to help reduce inflammation all throughout the body.
Curcumin is also a powerful antioxidant which helps to protect the kidneys from the damaging effects of oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress occurs when there aren’t enough antioxidants in the body to neutralize the free radicals that are produced by oxidation. Free radicals are unstable atoms that can cause damage within the body.
Oxidation is a normal metabolic process that is part of energy production, the immune response, liver detoxification, and more. Free radicals are also produced in high amounts when we are exposed to environmental toxins, air pollution, industrial chemicals, smoke, and more.
The kidneys are particularly vulnerable to the damaging effects of oxidative stress.

This is a very helpful and informative article on the importance of kidney health and natural supplements to support kidney function. I have a friend that has had a kidney transplant, and only has the one kidney. She is obviously concerned about looking after this transplanted kidney and is on anti-rejection drugs.
Can these supplements be used by kidney transplant patients? Or do you have a recommendation for kidney transplant patients? Thank you.
