What Is Candida?

Candida albicans is a form of yeast (which is a type of fungus) that normally lives in our bodies in small amounts. It can be found in the intestines, genitals, on the skin, and in the mouth.

Candida is usually kept in balance by healthy, beneficial bacterial colonies that are found in and on the body called probiotics. However, when these beneficial bacterial colonies are reduced or eradicated, candida fungus can overgrow and cause infection and a myriad of symptoms.

Candida fungal overgrowth is also sometimes referred to as candidiasis, and some simply refer to a candida albicans infection as “candida.”

Sites of infection can be found anywhere that candida typically resides. The infection may be present in one of these areas or a combination of these areas.

Oral infections are referred to as thrush and genital infections can involve a vaginal yeast infection or a penile yeast infection.

Candida infections of the skin usually present within the natural folds of the skin such as under the arms, under breasts, within the groin, and other areas.

Candida fungal overgrowth is also incredibly common within the intestines.

Infection can also become systemic, traveling through the blood and throughout most of the body. This is the most severe form of candida fungal overgrowth.

Causes of Candida Fungal Overgrowth

There are various causes that contribute to the development of candida fungal overgrowth which include:

  • High Sugar, High Processed Food Diets

Sugar is the primary food source for candida, so diets that are high in sugar encourage candida overgrowth to occur.

Furthermore, processed foods contain a plethora of toxins and chemicals that can lower probiotic presence in the gut, further encouraging the development of candida fungal overgrowth.

An assortment of high sugar processed foods.

  • Antibiotics

Prescription antibiotics indiscriminately kill off all of the bacteria in the gut, including the good bacteria. This can set the stage for fungal overgrowth because sufficient probiotic levels are not present to help keep candida in check.

While antibiotics are sometimes necessary, it is important to take a high potency probiotic (discussed further below) in conjunction, and be sure to nurture your gut health overall.

  • The Birth Control Pill

Just like the gut, the vagina has a microbial population of good bacteria, bad bacteria, and yeast colonies. The bad bacteria and yeast are kept in balance by the beneficial bacteria.

Some forms of birth control such as the birth control pill can alter the bacterial balance in the vagina which can lead to vaginal yeast infections.

  • Lowered Immune Function

Anything that lowers immune system function can encourage the development of candida fungal overgrowth.

Some causes of lowered immune function include a poor diet (high in sugar, processed foods, and hydrogenated oils and lacking in fresh whole foods), lack of sleep, not spending enough time in the sun/outdoors, Biotoxin Illness/Mold Toxicity, lack of exercise, and chronic stress.

  • Copper Toxicity

Copper Toxicity is a mineral imbalance and form of heavy metal toxicity that can contribute to candida fungal overgrowth. Copper is a natural anti-fungal and helps to keep candida levels in balance.

However, when copper levels rise to toxic levels within the body, a paradoxical biounavailability occurs, which renders the body unable to use its copper stores. This can encourage candida overgrowth because the copper mineral is no longer able to help balance it out.

How to Address Candida Fungal Overgrowth

The methods used to heal candida fungal overgrowth depend on the cause. In general, however, treatment is usually a multifactorial endeavor that can include the following elements:

  • Altering the Diet

Sugar is candida’s primary food source, so a candida healing diet will involve dramatically reducing one’s sugar intake. This includes alcohol, sweets/baked goods, and large amounts of fruit and fruit juices.

Carbohydrates should be reduced overall, especially simple carbohydrates.

Simple carbohydrates are broken down quickly into sugar in the body. These include foods such as white breads, white flour, white pasta, high fructose corn syrup, glucose, fructose, sucrose, soda, candy, and baked goods.

Dairy also contains sugars that can contribute to candida overgrowth so it is usually recommended to reduce dairy intake as well. Dairy can also be inflammatory to the body and encourage mucus production in the gut.

Fresh, whole foods that are low in sugar are all encouraged. These include:

    • Fresh vegetables
    • Low sugar fruits such as berries
    • Good quality proteins such as eggs, poultry, seafood, beef, nuts & seeds, and legumes
    • Good quality healthy fats such as nuts, seeds, avocado, coconut oil (also anti-fungal due to its caprylic acid content), and olive oil
    • Lots of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant roots, spices, and herbs such as turmeric, garlic, ginger, basil, oregano, and more

  • Supplements

There are a number of types of supplements that can be used to address candida fungal overgrowth.

Including a great quality anti-fungal formula is the most important part of a candida supplement protocol, which we will discuss in the next section.

The following are also important to include:

    • Probiotics

Probiotics help to rebuild the beneficial bacteria in the gut so that the overgrowth can be reduced and candida can be kept in balance moving forward. They help to create an optimal microbiome environment that does not encourage the overgrowth of candida or other opportunistic organisms.

Not all probiotics are created equal. Click here to check out my top recommendations, which I’ve used for years with great success.

    • Biofilm Busters

Biofilms are a protective barrier that some pathogens, including candida fungus, build around themselves to survive. A biofilm dissolving agent must be included in the healing protocol for candida overgrowth so that the anti-fungal supplements can reach the fungus to successfully eradicate the pathogen.

One of the best ways to dissolve biofilms is to use proteolythic systemic enzymes. These are enzymes that are taken on an empty stomach which help to dissolve the structure that the biofilm is made of.

    • Immune Support

Boosting the immune system will help the body to first eradicate the candida infection, and second to discourage it from coming back.

Probiotics, vitamin C, and vitamin D are all very helpful to support the immune system.

Drinking plenty of fresh filtered water, making sure you are optimizing your indoor air quality, and light therapy + infrared sauna therapy are all also excellent ways to help boost your immune system.

  • Reducing Stress

Chronic stress has a powerful influence on the immune system and can reduce its function, resulting in a higher likelihood of developing imbalances such as candida fungal overgrowth.

It is important to manage stress to boost immune function and also to support your overall health.

Practicing self-love, addressing possible trauma, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and utilizing natural stress supporting agents are all excellent ways to reduce chronic stress levels.
