What Are Systemic Enzymes?

In general, enzymes are proteins in the body that act as catalysts to help facilitate and speed up a wide variety of physiological processes/chemical reactions.

Some of these processes include digestion, wound healing, controlling inflammation, gene expression, cell building and repair, and much more.

Systemic enzymes are enzyme supplements that are designed to be taken on an empty stomach to help facilitate many systemic, meaning all over the body, functions and processes.

These enzymes are also referred to a proteolythic enzymes because they contain enzymes that specifically break down protein, including protease, serrapeptase, bromelain, and papain.

Our bodies naturally produce around 3,000 different kinds of enzymes. However, various factors can reduce our natural enzyme production such as stress, age, chronic health conditions, and more.

This is where a systemic proteolythic enzyme supplement can come in and be very helpful for a wide variety of health and healing needs.

The Health Benefits of Systemic Enzymes

  • Anti-Inflammatory/Pain Relief/Reducing Swelling

Inflammation is a natural immune responseA person with their hand on their lower back with back pain. that is necessary for wound healing and fighting infection. However, it becomes a problem when it is chronic.

Chronic inflammation can stress the body’s systems and organs and lead to many symptoms such as chronic pain, headaches, weight fluctuations, hormone imbalances, and much more.

In response to injury or stress, the body creates a protein called Circulating Immune Complex (CIC). This is needed and necessary, short term.

However, the body can continue to produce CICs long term, which can result in chronic pain, swelling, tissue irritation and damage, and other adverse effects.

Systemic enzymes can help to reduce and modulate the creation of CICs, which helps to henceforth reduce chronic inflammation and its adverse effects and symptoms.

  • Blood Cleansing

Chronic inflammation can cause the blood to thicken, in part because it can cause higher fibrin levels. Fibrin is a protein that is involved in blood clotting and is normally found in the blood within moderate concentrations.

Thicker blood can lead to heart attacks and strokes, among other health issues.

Systemic enzymes, specifically bromelain, can help to reduce excess fibrin that is present in the blood.

They can also help to dissolve and break down debris in the blood such as toxins, pathogens, and dead blood cells. This helps reduce their adverse effects on the body, reduce the workload for the liver, and aid in overall detoxification.

  • Biofilm Dissolving/Immune Supporting

Biofilms are protective structures that pathogens (bacteria, fungi, parasites, etc) can build around themselves as a A close up of blood cells.means of survival. Biofilms help them from being eradicated/killed.

If a protocol that is designed to heal a pathogen infection does not address dissolving biofilm, then it can produce less than desirable results and be less effective overall.

One of the most useful and powerful benefits of proteolythic systemic enzymes is their ability to dissolve biofilms. They do this by dissolving the biofilm structure, which is in part made of proteins.

This then allows the actual pathogen to be accessed and killed by the immune system and via other targeted herbs and agents, resulting in the successful eradication of the infection.

This approach can be helpful for gut infections, urinary tract infections/UTIs, sexually transmitted infections/STIs, and more.

  • Gut Healing

Many gut infections such as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth/SIBO, Candida/fungal overgrowth, and parasite infection involve the presence of biofilm.

Systemic enzymes help to heal these infections by allowing the pathogens to be successfully accessed, as described above.

If a gut healing protocol doesn’t include a “biofilm buster,” they will often fail to successfully eradicate the infection.

Furthermore, due to their anti-inflammatory and blood cleansing effects, they are also helpful for conditions such as “leaky gut.”

Leaky gut is when the tight junctions of the intestinal wall, which are supposed to remain only semi-permeable, widen (from irritation caused by pathogens, toxins, processed foods, etc), allowing food particles and other contents of the intestines to leak into the blood stream.

This can cause systemic inflammation, which can lead to many different symptoms and conditions such as autoimmunity.

Systemic enzymes can help to clear out this debris in the blood, and also help to calm the inflammation that is caused by these foreign particles, while other gut healing and intestinal lining healing measures are being implemented.

  • Supports Joint Health and Range of Motion

Conditions that impact the joints, such as arthritis, can involve an overproduction of Circulating Immune Complex, as described above.

This contributes to the pain associated with such conditions.

Systemic enzymes can help to reduce and control this overproduction, resulting in pain reduction and improved range of motion for arthritis sufferers.

They can also help with joint health by dissolving excess scar tissue after joint injury, as described below. This also helps to improve range of motion.

  • Scar Tissue Repair

When the body is injured, scar tissue is formed as part of the body’s healing process. Sometimes this can develop into fibrosis, which can cause stiffness and reduced organ function.

Systemic enzymes can help dissolve excess scar tissue, which improves the function and health of affected tissues and organs.

  • Speed Recovery from Injury or Surgery

Enzymes are a big part of wound healing, yet, as described above, our own natural enzyme production can decline for various reasons.

Supplementing with systemic proteolythic enzymes can help make up for this decline and henceforth help to speed wound healing and overall recovery time after being injured or having invasive surgery.

  • Speeds Exercise Recovery and Improves Athletic Performance

Increased muscle soreness and body achesA woman holding weights on her shoulders. after intense exercise are caused by inflammation. The body sends an inflammatory response to specific areas of the body as a way of trying to modulate the extra stress.

Systemic enzymes can help to reduce and control this inflammatory response so that they body can recover quicker, which results in less post-exercise aches and soreness.

The Best Systemic Enzyme Supplement

A lot of the chronic health conditions that I have had have involved severe systemic inflammation (causing chronic pain, joint stiffness, body aches, and more) gut infections, and immune system dysfunction.

The many relevant benefits of systemic enzymes were certainly called for as part of my healing protocol, and they have been an excellent and effective addition for sure.

I’ve tried several, most of which contained at least one ingredient that was derived from fungus.

Fungus can be inflammatory, and I also have many sensitivities, so I wanted to find one that was free of fungus to be able to take more long term.

Finally, I found Dr. Jockers Proteo Enzymes, and its beenDr. Jockers Proteo Enzymes systemic enzyme supplement. the best systemic enzyme product that I’ve tried, by far.

Its ingredients include:

  • Pancreatin 10X: the main trio of pancreatic enzymes (protease, amylase, lipase) derived from porcine
  • Rutin: a flavonoid derived from Sophora japonica leaf that has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Bromelain: a proteolythic enzymes derived from pineapple that plays a big role in the anti-inflammatory actions of systemic enzymes
  • Trypsin Complex: a porcine derived proteolythic enzyme
  • Papain: a proteolythic enzyme derived from papaya fruit
  • Serrapeptase: a bacterial proteolythic enzyme

The capsules are acid resistant, which means they are designed to withstand stomach acid and maintain their viability on their way to the small intestine, where they will be successfully absorbed into the blood stream.

It is best to take systemic enzymes on an empty stomach, as this is how they are able to get to work on their many functions as descried above. If they are taken with food, they will go to work helping to digest and break down the food, which is not what the intended purpose of these are.

I’ve found that it works best for me to take them first thing in the morning and last thing at night. I tend to eat breakfast about an hour to an hour and a half after getting up. I also eat dinner about 3 hours before going to bed, so I’ve found these times to be the most ideal for taking them on an empty stomach.

I started out with just 1 capsule at first to test the waters and see if I would have “die off” symptoms or if it would exacerbate any of my existing symptoms, and much to my delight, it didn’t at all.Dr. Jockers Proteo Enzymes supplement facts label.

When a “biofilm buster” is dissolving biofilm, this can cause “die off” symptoms, as the pathogens are being accessed and killed. When this happens, they can release toxic byproducts into the bloodstream which can result in symptoms such as headaches, increased fatigue, and malaise.

However, if a biofilm busting supplement is formulated well, the combination of ingredients will help to cleanse the blood in the process, so you aren’t experiencing any uncomfortable symptoms.

After about a week, I increased my dose to 1 capsule twice per day and then after a few more days to 2 capsules, twice per day and I’ve stayed at that dose for a while.

Since then, I’ve been able to reduce several inflammation markers and have made considerable progress in my gut healing journey.

I attribute this in large part to this supplement’s ability to break down biofilms, which is so important for being able to effectively and successfully eradicate pathogens in the gut.

I’m grateful for the gentleness of this supplement, which is another reason it has stood out.

This has also helped as part of my efforts to heal from Biotoxin Illness/Mold Toxicity from prolonged exposure to toxic black mold.

Mold exposure can cause severe systemic inflammation which leads to a whole host of symptoms such as joint stiffness, chronic pain, body aches, sleep disturbance, brain fog, anxiety, and much more.

About 2 to 3 weeks after starting this, I started to notice a decrease in my body aches and pain, especially in the morning, when the stiffness and aching was the worst.

Any fungus that is housed in the body after prolonged mold exposure can also comprise biofilm. These have further helped improve the efficacy of the antifungal supplements that I take as well.

At the 2 capsules, twice per day dose, this bottle lasts me about a month.
