In general, enzymes are proteins in the body that act as catalysts to help facilitate and speed up a wide variety of physiological processes/chemical reactions.
Some of these processes include digestion, wound healing, controlling inflammation, gene expression, cell building and repair, and much more.
Systemic enzymes are enzyme supplements that are designed to be taken on an empty stomach to help facilitate many systemic, meaning all over the body, functions and processes.
These enzymes are also referred to a proteolythic enzymes because they contain enzymes that specifically break down protein, including protease, serrapeptase, bromelain, and papain.
Our bodies naturally produce around 3,000 different kinds of enzymes. However, various factors can reduce our natural enzyme production such as stress, age, chronic health conditions, and more.
This is where a systemic proteolythic enzyme supplement can come in and be very helpful for a wide variety of health and healing needs.

- Anti-Inflammatory/Pain Relief/Reducing Swelling
Inflammation is a natural immune response that is necessary for wound healing and fighting infection. However, it becomes a problem when it is chronic.
Chronic inflammation can stress the body’s systems and organs and lead to many symptoms such as chronic pain, headaches, weight fluctuations, hormone imbalances, and much more.
In response to injury or stress, the body creates a protein called Circulating Immune Complex (CIC). This is needed and necessary, short term.
However, the body can continue to produce CICs long term, which can result in chronic pain, swelling, tissue irritation and damage, and other adverse effects.
Systemic enzymes can help to reduce and modulate the creation of CICs, which helps to henceforth reduce chronic inflammation and its adverse effects and symptoms.

Chronic inflammation can cause the blood to thicken, in part because it can cause higher fibrin levels. Fibrin is a protein that is involved in blood clotting and is normally found in the blood within moderate concentrations.

The Best Systemic Enzyme Supplement
A lot of the chronic health conditions that I have had have involved severe systemic inflammation (causing chronic pain, joint stiffness, body aches, and more) gut infections, and immune system dysfunction.
The many relevant benefits of systemic enzymes were certainly called for as part of my healing protocol, and they have been an excellent and effective addition for sure.
I’ve tried several, most of which contained at least one ingredient that was derived from fungus.
Fungus can be inflammatory, and I also have many sensitivities, so I wanted to find one that was free of fungus to be able to take more long term.
Finally, I found Dr. Jockers Proteo Enzymes, and its been the best systemic enzyme product that I’ve tried, by far.
Its ingredients include:
- Pancreatin 10X: the main trio of pancreatic enzymes (protease, amylase, lipase) derived from porcine
- Rutin: a flavonoid derived from Sophora japonica leaf that has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
- Bromelain: a proteolythic enzymes derived from pineapple that plays a big role in the anti-inflammatory actions of systemic enzymes
- Trypsin Complex: a porcine derived proteolythic enzyme
- Papain: a proteolythic enzyme derived from papaya fruit
- Serrapeptase: a bacterial proteolythic enzyme
The capsules are acid resistant, which means they are designed to withstand stomach acid and maintain their viability on their way to the small intestine, where they will be successfully absorbed into the blood stream.
It is best to take systemic enzymes on an empty stomach, as this is how they are able to get to work on their many functions as descried above. If they are taken with food, they will go to work helping to digest and break down the food, which is not what the intended purpose of these are.
I’ve found that it works best for me to take them first thing in the morning and last thing at night. I tend to eat breakfast about an hour to an hour and a half after getting up. I also eat dinner about 3 hours before going to bed, so I’ve found these times to be the most ideal for taking them on an empty stomach.
I started out with just 1 capsule at first to test the waters and see if I would have “die off” symptoms or if it would exacerbate any of my existing symptoms, and much to my delight, it didn’t at all.
When a “biofilm buster” is dissolving biofilm, this can cause “die off” symptoms, as the pathogens are being accessed and killed. When this happens, they can release toxic byproducts into the bloodstream which can result in symptoms such as headaches, increased fatigue, and malaise.
However, if a biofilm busting supplement is formulated well, the combination of ingredients will help to cleanse the blood in the process, so you aren’t experiencing any uncomfortable symptoms.
After about a week, I increased my dose to 1 capsule twice per day and then after a few more days to 2 capsules, twice per day and I’ve stayed at that dose for a while.
Since then, I’ve been able to reduce several inflammation markers and have made considerable progress in my gut healing journey.
I attribute this in large part to this supplement’s ability to break down biofilms, which is so important for being able to effectively and successfully eradicate pathogens in the gut.
I’m grateful for the gentleness of this supplement, which is another reason it has stood out.
This has also helped as part of my efforts to heal from Biotoxin Illness/Mold Toxicity from prolonged exposure to toxic black mold.
