What Is Mold Toxicity?

Mold Toxicity, also referred to as Biotoxin Illness, Mold Illness, and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome/CIRS, is a multi-symptom chronic illness that is developed as a result of exposure to mold within a water damaged building.

Mold exposure has a significant adverse impact on many systems and organs of the body, primarily including the brain, gut, endocrine system, and immune system.

As a result of this impact, a wide variety of symptoms can develop. Symptoms of Mold Toxicity can include severe chronic fatigue, brain fog, multiple sensitivities, hormone imbalances, chronic pain, muscle weakness, mobility issues, and many many more.

For much more on Biotoxin Illness/Mold Toxicity in general, its many possible symptoms, how it impacts the body, and diagnostic testing options, click here.

There are 2 main parts to sculpting a comprehensive protocol to heal from Biotoxin Illness: the internal portion and the environmental portion. Equal focus must be attributed to both parts so that successful healing may take place.

The environmental protocol is geared toward cleansing your surroundings and eliminating your exposure to the mold. Much more on the environmental portion of healing can be found here.

The internal portion is geared toward healing the body. This protocol involves multiple steps and is a bit different for everyone depending on your unique case and bioindividuality.

Primary Bases to Cover for Healing

While each individual’s specific protocol will differ depending on unique components such as health history, genetics, and more, the following are the primary elements to consider for healing.

It is important to work with a medical professional who is aware of the implications of Biotoxin Illness/Mold Toxicity, and is familiar with the necessary steps to heal.

The following steps are implemented after one has been removed from the source of mold exposure and is living in a mold-free environment.

  • Respiratory Support

Inhaling mold spores is the primary way that mycotoxins enter the body. Due to this, mold exposure can and does contribute to various respiratory imbalances and symptoms such as asthma.

Shortness of breath, chest tightness, and wheezing are common symptoms of Biotoxin Illness/Mold Toxicity as well.

There are a plethora of natural supports that can be used to help heal lung tissue, open the bronchial tubes/airways, reduce inflammation in the lungs, and help to soothe and reduce respiratory symptoms overall.

Click here to check out all of my top recommendations for super effective natural lung support, all of which I have used and still use to nurture this vital area of the body.

  • Addressing Limbic System Impairment

Mold exposure has a very notable impact on the brain, which accounts for many of the symptoms that are associated with Mold Toxicity.

One of the main ways that mold impacts the brain is by causing impairment within the limbic system. This is the part of the brain that is responsible for sending out the stress signal to the rest of the body via the autonomic nervous system. This response is often referred to as the “fight or flight” response.

The brain perceives mold exposure as a form of trauma, or an extreme form of stress. This then results in the occupation of a chronic, heightened stress response that causes the brain to send faulty signals to the rest of the body. This can be referred to as “limbic system impairment.”

Chronic occupation of this state results in symptoms such as “multiple chemical sensitivity,” chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression, heart palpitations, brain fog, and a whole host of other symptoms.

Limbic system impairment can also lead to chronic mast cell activation, which is one of the primary reasons that Mold Toxicity patients will exhibit notable sensitivities to various treatments, supplements, medications, foods, chemicals, and more, which can often complicate treatment measures.

Mast cells are a type of immune cell that normally help the body respond to “threats” or foreign invaders such as environmental toxins and pathogens. However, when the body gets stuck in a chronic state of stimulation and the immune system is henceforth constantly in overdrive, mast cells can become chronically activated. This then causes the body to react to all kinds of triggers such as chemicals and foods. This chronic inflammatory response is also behind the long list of physical, mental, and emotional symptoms that are associated with Mold Toxicity.

One must retrain the brain to develop new, healthy neural pathways that will take the brain out of the survival stress response and into the parasympathetic state, where healing can take place.

This is done via applied neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to change and create new, healthy neural pathways.

The Dynamic Neural Retraining System is a program that was developed to heal limbic system impairment. This program can be used as a tool for healing from any type of physical, emotional, or mental trauma.

The program involves a minimum of 6 months of daily exercises, a shift in cognitive associations, and other elements. It is an online program that first includes a self-paced instructional period, followed by the independent application of the exercises and tools presented.

I have personally been doing the DNRS program for some time, and it has been one of the most effective tools that I’ve used as part of my healing from Biotoxin Illness/Mold Toxicity, as well as one of my most valuable investments.

Addressing limbic system impairment is one of the most important parts of healing from Mold Toxicity.

  • Support Gut Health

Gut health is an incredibly critical part of our overall health. Our gut plays a big role in our immune function, hormone balance, mental and emotional health, digestive capacity/ability to absorb and assimilate vital nutrients, and our detoxification ability.

Mold Toxicity has an adverse impact on our gut health, so this area must be addressed as part of a successful healing protocol. Furthermore, one of the main exit pathways for detoxification is through the gut, so supporting this area ensures that biotoxins can be eliminated via this pathway as opposed to being reabsorbed.

A key step in supporting gut health is repopulating the gut with probiotics. Probiotics are the live, good bacteria that are present in the gut and other areas of the body. These bacteria play many important roles including helping to digest good, maintain gut lining integrity, keeping pathogens at bay, producing nutrients and short chain fatty acids, and more.

Click here to check out my top recommendations for probiotics.

An additional step in ensuring a healthy and healing gut environment is to raise butyric acid levels. Butyric acid is a short chain fatty acid that has several important functions including producing energy for our cells, supporting gut lining integrity, reducing inflammation, balancing blood sugar, supporting digestion, and supporting healthy DNA.

More information on butyric acid as well as my top butyric acid supplement recommendation can be found here.

Following a low sugar, gut healing eating plan is also key. A gut healing focus can be incorporated into the additional dietary guidelines explained below, which includes additional factors to consider for a Mold Toxicity eating plan overall.

A translucent human form showing the abdominal organs/gut.

  • Reduce Inflammation

One of the main ways that mold exposure impacts the body is by creating a cascade of systemic inflammation, as the immune system becomes upregulated as a result of the continuously circulating biotoxins present within the body.

Reducing inflammation and calming this response is key to healing.

Following an anti-inflammatory diet is important, which is discussed further below.

Natural healing agents that have powerful anti-inflammatory benefits include omega 3 fish oil, black cumin seed oil, and curcumin from turmeric. Thorne curcumin phytosome supplement.

Thorne Curcumin Phytosome is the best curcumin supplement I’ve tried, as its been a staple component of my protocol for a while.

Curcumin is the active compound found in turmeric root that gives it is powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Along with being anti-inflammatory, curcumin is also helpful for natural pain relief, brain support, antioxidant protection, heart health, and more.

This product stands out because Thorne uses a unique method to optimize the bioavailability and absorption of the nutrients, which really makes a difference in the efficacy of the product. The curcuminoids in this supplement are bound to phospholipids (sunflower derived), which allows them to be more thoroughly assimilated by the body.

This particular curcumin supplement is the most clinically studied curcumin on the market and has demonstrated a 29-times greater absorption rate than any other curcumin product.

A standard dose is 1 to 2 capsules twice daily with or without food.

This has been very helpful in reducing symptoms of Biotoxin Illness, as well as helping to reduce endometriosis pain.

  • Dissolve Biofilms

Biofilms are protective layers that pathogens build around themselves as a means of survival. When mold spores are inhaled, mold colonies can form in the nasal passages and the gut. These colonies protect themselves with biofilm, which must be dissolved in order to eradicate the fungal colonies from these areas of the body. Seagate Olive Leaf Nasal Spray.

The best way to dissolve biofilms found in the gut is to use systemic enzymes. These are enzymes that are formulated to be taken on an empty stomach to be able to reach pathogens and fungus and dissolve the biofilm found on them.

More on systemic enzymes and the best supplement I’ve ever found can be found here.

A biofilm dissolving nasal spray is also needed to account for the mold colonies found in the nose.

Seagate Olive Leaf Nasal Spray has been the most effective anti-fungal, biofilm dissolving nasal spray I’ve used. It contains both EDTA and xylitol, both of which are effective biofilm busters.

The standard dose is 1 to 3 sprays in each nostril, 2 to 3 times per day.

  • Binders

Binders are healing agents that are used to bind to toxins and facilitate their removal from the body. These are needed to heal from Biotoxin Illness/Mold Toxicity because people who are ill with this condition have an impaired ability to detoxify on their own.

There are both prescription binders and natural supplement binders that can be used in combination for the most comprehensive treatment.

Binders are taken for an extended amount of time after the source of the mold exposure is removed, so that the body is thoroughly cleansed of the biotoxin load.

Most binders are taken on an empty stomach away from food and other supplements and medications. This is to ensure that the binder is effectively binding to the biotoxins and not to the nutrients from food and/or other supplements

It is important when taking any type of binder to make sure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day. This helps to ensure that the toxins can be moved through the body efficiently and eliminated successfully.

When it comes to prescription binders, either cholestyramine or cholsevelam (described further below) are used, not both. Natural binders can be rotated in combination with prescription binders as well.

And lastly, the standard dose is included below, however dosing is completely individualized. This is huge. You must take a dose that does not exacerbate your existing symptoms, which can happen if your dose is too high. This is because the binders will pull the toxins out of the body, and if this happens too quickly or in large quantities, the body becomes temporarily more toxic.

While the goal is of course to eliminate the toxins, this must happen gradually so that your body can accommodate the process and your symptoms are not worsened.

Binders can include:

    • Cholestyramine

This is a prescription medication that is used “off label” as a binder for Mold Toxicity. It is traditionally used to lower cholesterol, but can be used for the purposes of removing biotoxins. it does so by binding to the toxins and removing them through the liver and bile, through the intestines and out via the stool.

Cholestyramine must be acquired from a compounding pharmacy that can remove all of the extra ingredients, leaving just the cholestyramine powder as the only ingredient.

This medication is taken 4 times per day, at least 30 minutes before meals.

    • Cholsevelam/Welchol

Cholsevelam is a prescription medication that is the generic form of Welchol, they are the same product. This medication works similar to cholestyramine, yet it has a somewhat lower binding capacity.

This medication can be acquired from your local pharmacy and is sold in tablet form.

The standard dose for Mold Toxicity is 2, 625mg tablets, 3 times per day 30 minutes before meals.

    • BioToxin Binder

BioToxin Binder is a multiple ingredient binder supplement that is excellent for detoxifying biotoxins. I take this binder in a rotation with the others included below.

This product includes humic acid, fulvic acid, broccoli sprouts, molybdenum, and yucca root, all of which synergistically help to support the liver and bind to biotoxins, facilitating their removal from the body.

The use of carbons (such as humic and fulvic acid) as binders is particularly effective because these compounds are able to encourage our body’s innate detoxification abilities on a cellular level.

The mineral molybdenum is particularly helpful for cleansing the blood.Cellcore Biosciences BioToxin Binder supplement.

Yucca root is high in antioxidants and supports the liver and immune system.

Broccoli sprouts are a superfood that are high in antioxidants, are anti-inflammatory, and support the liver and immune system.

All of these ingredients are also supportive of gut health which is huge for our immune function and ensuring that toxins are effectively eliminated from the body via the intestines.

The standard dose for this supplement is 2 capsules, twice daily with or without food. Carbons are unique in that they do not need to be taken on an empty stomach, as they will target toxins and encourage detoxification either way.

I’ve always taken this on an empty stomach, however.

It is best to start at a low dose and gradually increase, as this is a powerful binder.

    • Activated Charcoal

Charcoal is made from coconut shells and is a highly effective binder to remove a variety of different forms of toxins, including biotoxins. Now Activated Charcoal supplement.

It is intended to be taken on an empty stomach and away from other supplements or medications.

I’ve used a few different varieties of charcoal, but Now Activated Charcoal has been the best one.

The standard dose for Mold Toxicity is 2 capsules, twice per day.

    • Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay is a particular type of clay that forms from the aging of volcanic ashes. It may sound a bit strange, but this clay is incredibly healing and is an excellent binder to remove toxins from the body.Great Plains Bentonite Clay supplement.

Bentonite clay can even be used as a form of natural skincare when made into a face mask as it helps to remove impurities from the skin.

I’ve tried several bentonite clay products, some powders and some liquid, and I’ve always come back to Great Plains Bentonite Clay, which is a liquid.

After I open the bottle, I keep it in the fridge.

The standard dose is 1 tablespoon, twice per day on an empty stomach.

    • Glucomannan

Glucomannan is a water-soluble polysaccharide fiber that is derived from the roots of the konjac plant. Now Glucomannan supplement.

It is a gentle, well-tolerated binder that is effective at removing a wide variety of different forms of toxins from the body, including a variety of biotoxins from mold.

Glucomannan can also help to promote bowel regularity, which can be helpful for those Mold Toxicity patients who experience constipation.

Now Glucomannan is my favorite, as I’ve been taking it for quite some time now and tolerate it very well.

The standard dose is 3 capsules, twice per day on an empty stomach.

  • Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide/VIP

VIP is a hormone that behaves as a neuromodulator and neurotransmitter in the body. It plays several key roles including regulating endocrine system function, inflammatory responses, and neurological function.

Most people with Biotoxin Illness will have low VIP, which is one of the primary reasons that those with this condition have chronic, uncontrolled systemic inflammation.

A special VIP medication has been developed that must be acquired from 1 of several particular compounding pharmacies in the United States.

This medication is prepared as a refrigerated nasal spray at 500mcg/ml. The standard dose for Mold Toxicity is 1 spray in alternating nostrils, 4 times per day.

This medication has specifically helped me with reducing anxiety and has really helped with my motion sensitivity when driving.

  • Support Detoxification

Supporting the detoxification organs and pathways is an important step, as this helps to improve the efficacy of the binders included above and helps to support the body to continue to detox and balance overall.

    • Glutathione

The liver has over 500 functions in the human body, and is one of our main detoxification organs. Glutathione is a tripeptide that is made of the amino acids glycine, cysteine, and glutamic acid. Also referred to as the body’s “master antioxidant,” glutathione is one of the most critical nutrients for detoxification, immune function, and more.

Glutathione is made in the liver, however our body’s ability to produce enough glutathione can become compromised due to genetics, chronic stress, age, and more. Prolonged exposure to mold can also reduce the body’s ability to make enough glutathione.

Due to this, supplementing with a high quality glutathione supplement can be a huge part of successfully healing from Mold Toxicity and a great way to support the liver as well.

Prolonged mold exposure can also increase oxidative stress, so it is important to include a high quality antioxidant supplement in order to help neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals. More on antioxidants can be found here.

Most forms of glutathione supplements aren’t well absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Liposomal forms have a higher absorption rate, as well as the acetylated form of glutathione.

Out of the several different glutathione supplements that I have tried, Pure Therapro Rx S-Acetyl Glutathione has by far been the best.

Acetylated glutathione remains stable throughout the digestive system. This product is also enteric coated, which makes it more resistant to stomach acid,Pure Therapro Rx Glutathione Gold supplement. increasing overall absorption. These factors help this product to be more bioavailable, which means it is better able to successfully enter the body’s cells and henceforth fulfill its many important roles.

I have tolerated this supplement very well, considering the many sensitives that I have had as a result of Biotoxin Illness.

The standard dose is 1, 300mg capsule, twice per day on an empty stomach. I find that taking 1 first thing in the morning and 1 last thing at night has been the most effective.

    • Phosphatidylcholine

Phosphatidylecholine is a phospholipid that is especially helpful in supporting the brain, liver, cellular health, and mitochondrial function (energy production). This makes it a key component of supporting our body’s ability to properly detoxify.

This phospholipid helps to rebuild and repair cell membranes which helps to control inflammation and support brain function. This is particularly helpful in healing from Mold Toxicity because of the adverse impact that mold exposure has on the brain

It also helps to bind to mycotoxins and support the liver in processing and eliminating toxins.

Seeking Health Optimal PC is a combination of 3 phospholipids including phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylinositol. All of these ingredients are derived from sunflower, as this is a soy free supplement (it is also free of all other common allergens).Seeking Health Optimal PC supplement.

I’ve been taking this supplement for years and it’s been a huge help in my overall detoxification efforts for both Biotoxin Illness and Copper Toxicity.

It is powerful yet gentle and well-tolerated.

The standard dose is 1, 800mg softgel daily with food. I keep my bottle in the refrigerator after opening to preserve freshness for longer.

Additional ways to support the body’s detoxification abilities include epsom salt baths and a whole food, anti-inflammatory eating plan which is discussed further below.

Infrared sauna therapy is also an incredibly effective way of facilitating detoxification. Much more on sauna therapy can be found here.

  • Anti-Fungals

As mentioned above, when mold spores are inhaled, mold colonies can form in the nasal passages as well as the gut. These colonies are eliminated by using anti-fungal healing agents. Dr. Jockers Candida Elim supplement.

Seagate Olive Leaf Nasal Spray, which is included above, is an excellent anti-fungal nasal spray that includes wild indigo and olive leaf extract, both of which have powerful anti-fungal properties. This nasal spray also contains biofilm dissolving ingredients.

The best anti-fungal supplement that I’ve ever found to account for fungal colonies in the gut is Dr. Jockers Candida Elim. This supplement stands out for both its efficacy and how gentle it is.

A lot of anti-fungal supplements can be cause “die off” reactions, where the pathogens are being killed and release toxic byproducts into the bloodstream, creating a period of increased toxicity and exacerbation of symptoms.

This supplement does not exacerbate symptoms, yet is highly effective at killing mold and fungal colonies in the gut. It is also anti-inflammatory, making it very relevant for a Mold Toxicity healing protocol.

This supplement is excellent for a candida healing protocol as well as being used as a general anti-fungal agent for a Mold Toxicity healing protocol.

Candida Elim contains a powerful combination of oregano extract, sodium caprylate, ginger, turmeric, and olive leaf extract.

Oregano extract and olive leaf extract are both excellent herbal anti-fungals.

Sodium caprylate is a compound derived from caprylic acid, which is an anti-fungal as well as an overall gut support, as it encourages optimal bacterial balance in the intestines.

Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory and has antioxidant properties. It is also soothing and nurturing to the gut and can help relieve nausea as well.

The amount per dose is unique to the individual, however the standard dose for this supplement is 2 capsules per day on an empty stomach.

  • Mold Conscious Anti-Inflammatory Eating Plan

“Food as medicine” is a highly applicable notion when it comes to healing from Mold Toxicity as diet plays a huge role in our overall health and can greatly impact healing.

The eating plan that is part of a Mold Toxicity protocol is primarily anti-inflammatory, low in sugar, and low in foods that commonly contain mold.

An anti-inflammatory eating plan excludes inflammatory foods and ingredients such as gluten, soy, sugar, excess carbohydrates, processed foods, and hydrogenated oils and emphasizes whole, healing foods that naturally reduce inflammation in the body.

Sugar is not only inflammatory, but it can encourage mold colonies to grow within the body so it is of the utmost importance to avoid sugar.

Emphasized foods include lots of fresh organic vegetables, herbs/spices, low sugar fruits such as berries, good quality proteins, and good quality fats such as olive oil, coconut oil, and avocado.

Foods that are more likely to contain mold include:

    • Tomatoes
    • Coffee (there is a select brand that tests for mold and mycotoxins and is certified organic, which is acceptable on a low mold diet, they are discussed further below)
    • Grains
    • Alcohol
    • Dairy & cheese (butter is fine)
    • Dried fruit
    • Truffles
    • Mushrooms
    • Yeast
    • White distilled vinegar
    • Peanuts & cashews

An assortment of colorful fruits and vegetables.

While coffee consumption should be kept to low to moderate amounts in general, there is a specialized line of coffee that really goes the extra mile in testing their coffee for mold and mycotoxins, making them a unique and acceptable option.

Purity Coffee is the most health conscious coffee available, as they are USDA certified organic and lab test all of their organic arabica coffee beans for mold, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and pesticides. Their coffee selections have 65% higher levels of antioxidants than other organic coffees, due to their specialized proprietary roasting protocol.

They offer light-medium, medium, and dark roasts as well as a decaffeinated option.

  • Addressing Nutrient Deficiencies

Biotoxin Illness can cause various vitamin, mineral, and nutrient deficiencies such as zinc and magnesium.

The specific deficiencies that may be present are unique to the individual and can be determined via specialized lab testing such as Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis/HTMA, red blood cell elements testing (which tests for the intracellular levels of various minerals and nutrients), and others.

Supplementing with nutrients that you are deficient in and emphasizing foods that are naturally high in these nutrients is key to encouraging healing and balancing the body.

Optimal immune system function is also dependent on sufficient levels of vitamins and minerals.

  • Addressing Possible Trauma, Mental and Emotional Healing, and Mindset

After going through the challenges associated with having a mold problem in your home, the resulting illness, and other complications, we can certainly become rather fearful of mold and see it as a strong “threat.” Some of these experiences can also be traumatic, as this process can involve many challenges, sudden changes, severe and serious illness, financial burdens, and much more.

That said, it is important to take all of this one step at a time and know that this will all be ok and that you will heal. Seek out emotional support while going through this, and make sure to address any possible trauma that you may be experiencing. Much more on trauma and effective healing resources can be found here.

While it is of course best to remain aware of your living space and do your best to keep your home mold-free, do know that mold is a natural part of our world and while it is toxic to our health when present indoors, it does not have to be feared.

As you evolve through your healing, know that it is entirely possible to live in a state of conscious awareness, without living in a state of fear.

Managing your stress levels is incredibly important for healing, so it is key to remain conscious of your mindset as you move forward.

Our mental health impacts our physical health and vice versa.

The Dynamic Neural Retraining System program explained above is also a very powerful tool to use for healing from emotional and mental trauma. The DNRS program is also very helpful for encouraging a positive mindset and facilitating the daily thought patterns that are needed to encourage healing and move out of the chronic stress, survival state.
