The Respiratory System
The respiratory system refers to a network of tissues and organs that are involved with important physiological functions such as breathing, oxygen transport, and elimination of carbon dioxide waste.
This system consists of the nose, throat (pharynx), mouth, voice box (larynx), wind pipe (trachea), and lungs.
When air is inhaled, it travels down the wind pipe into the lungs via your 2 bronchial tubes. The bronchial tubes divide into smaller passages within each side of the lungs called bronchioles. The bronchioles have many tiny air sacs at the end of them, which allow inhaled oxygen to be passed into your blood.
As our cells use the oxygen that is being transported throughout the body via the blood, they produce carbon dioxide, a waste byproduct. The blood then transports carbon dioxide back to the lungs, and it is eliminated from the body when you exhale.
The respiratory system is equipped with several methods that help to protect the lungs from foreign particles, allergens, bacteria, viruses, etc.
The nose contains hairs that help to filter out large particles in the air from entering your lungs. In addition, the wind pipe and air passages are lined with tiny hairs called cilia, which sweep foreign particles and fluids out of the airway keeping them out of the lungs.
Furthermore, mucus is produced in your trachea and bronchial tubes, which helps keep air passages moist and also helps to keep allergens and foreign particles out of your lungs.
Respiratory Imbalance
Various factors can contribute to the development of increased inflammation, irritation, swelling, and mucus overproduction, which overwhelm the built-in protective capacities within the lungs and respiratory system described above.
Conditions such as asthma, respiratory infections, environmental toxins (mold spores, industrial pollutants, etc), chemicals from conventional cleaning products, and more all contribute to increased inflammation in the airways and lungs.
This inflammation can lead to swelling, chest pressure and tightness, mucus overproduction, shortness of breath, chest pain, general breathing difficulty and more. It can also decrease oxygen transfer throughout the body and reduce respiratory function overall.
Even if one does not have a respiratory condition, it is helpful and beneficial to your overall health to support your respiratory system because we are exposed to such a large influx of respiratory irritants (environmental toxins, pollutants, chemicals, etc) in today’s world on a daily basis.
Lung & Respiratory Healing Agents
There are a number of natural herbs and nutrients that stand out as having powerful and effective respiratory supporting properties. Most of these agents help to support the lungs and respiratory system because they have such strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
- Antioxidants
As explained further here, free radicals produced by oxidation within the body can have an adverse impact on the health of many systems, including the respiratory system. Anything that is an antioxidant will be beneficial for one’s lung and respiratory health.
- Osha Root
Originating in the Rocky Mountains of North America, osha root is a powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune system support. It increases blood circulation to the lungs and helps to relieve congestion in the sinuses and airways.
- Mullein Leaf
Mullein is also a powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune boosting agent. It specifically helps to expel mucus and reduce overproduction. It can also help to relax the airways and sooth bronchospasm.
- Elecampane Root
Elecampane is also a powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune supporting herb. Like mullein leaf, it specifically helps to expel mucus and reduce overproduction.
- English Ivy
English ivy is supportive to the respiratory system in large part because of its anti-inflammatory and immune supporting properties. It specifically helps to reduce swelling in the airways which can make breathing easier. It is also soothing and can be helpful to reduce cough.
- Monk Fruit
Monk fruit is anti-inflammatory and soothing to the throat and airways. It can also help to reduce mucus overproduction.
- Tiger Milk Mushroom
This medicinal mushroom originates in Southeast Asia and is a powerful respiratory support due to its notable anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune supporting properties. It can help relieve cough, reduce mucus overproduction, and reduce swelling in the airways.
- Lobelia
This is a powerful herb that can act as a natural bronchodilator, opening and relaxing the airways to allow for easier breathing.
Lobelia also helps reduce mucus production in the lungs and can improve overall lung health.
This herb can also be used as a calming agent to relieve anxiety.
- Honeysuckle
Honeysuckle, specifically Japanese Honeysuckle, has powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune modulating properties. It can help regulate immune overactivity or immune underactivity. It can also help to relax airways.
- Cordyceps Mushroom
Cordyceps is a medicinal mushroom that has many health benefits including supporting adrenal health, antioxidant protection, energy production, and improving lung function. It is also an excellent immune system support.
It reduces inflammation in the lungs, which helps to widen airways and allows for easier breathing.
My Favorite Lung & Respiratory Support Supplements
After years of being unknowingly exposed to toxic mold, part of my healing protocol from Biotoxin Illness has prioritized lung and respiratory support. Mold can have an adverse impact on this area because this is the primary avenue that mold spores in the air enter the body.
As mentioned above, it is also helpful in general to support one’s respiratory health due to the increased influx of environmental toxins, pollutants, and respiratory irritants that we are exposed to on a daily basis in today’s world.
1) Lng-Renew by Primal Herb
One particular supplement has stood out, as it contains some of the most powerful respiratory healing herbs and has shown the most noticeable efficacy of anything I have tried.
This is Lng-Renew by Primal Herb.
This product contains a formulation of:
- Mullein Leaf Extract
- Elecampane Root Extract
- English Ivy Leaf Extract
- Organic Honeysuckle Extract
- Osha Root Extract
- Monk Fruit
- Black Pepper Fruit Extract
As described above, these are some of the main lung and respiratory healing herbs available, as each one houses unique benefits that specifically help to support this area of the body.
This product also contains black pepper fruit extract which helps with absorption and increasing the bioavailability of the herbs.
Within about 2 weeks of starting it, I noticed a considerable decrease in mucus production. After continuing with regular daily use, I have also noticed that my chest feels much lighter, my airways are more open, and I breathe much easier in general.
I usually add approximately 1/2 teaspoon to a room temperature liquid and it mixes well. It tastes delightful, in large part because of the monk fruit ingredient.
It can be added to any liquid of your choice.

There are a couple additional supplements and oils that are also excellent natural lung and respiratory supports that I have used as part of my protocol with success as well:
2) Vibrant Blue Oils Breathe Organic Essential Oil
Vibrant Blue Oils is one of the most incredible healing tools I have come across throughout my healing journey. They have an array of wild-crafted, organic, therapeutic grade essential oils that are extremely effective for a wide variety of healing needs.
These oils are formulated as signature blends that are designed to support specific symptoms and root causes of illness.
I use a number of their oils and they have continuously blown me away in how helpful and effective they are.
One such oil is the Breathe oil.
This oil is a blend of basil, eucalyptus, myrtle, peppermint, and spruce in a base of fractionated coconut oil.
It is formulated to support the respiratory system by reducing inflammation and congestion, soothing cough, and acting as a natural bronchodilator in opening the airways.
To administer, apply 2 to 3 drops to your chest and throat and massage into skin thoroughly, 1 to 2 times per day. This oil can also be applied to your pillowcase to help support better breathing when laying down/sleeping.
You can also use this aromatically by holding the bottle to your nose and breathing in and out 3 to 4 times.
This oil is a staple for me and I keep a bottle of it on hand at all times. It is so effective at opening my airways, and anytime I feel a tightness in my chest or feel a reaction of some kind coming on, I hold the bottle to my nose and inhale and exhale a few times and it really helps to open my airways.
I drop about 3 drops on my pillow a few nights a week and it has really helped to improve my breathing throughout the night.
I highly recommend this oil for any kind of lung and respiratory support needs, its fantastic.

Optimizing Your Indoor Air Quality
Another important step in supporting your lungs and respiratory system is to cleanse and optimize the air that you breathe on a day to day basis within your living environment.
The air indoors can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than the air outside due to contaminants such as mold spores, dust and dust mites, bacteria, volatile organic compounds/VOCs, chemicals from conventional cleaning products, and more.
In order to cleanse these contaminants from the air and henceforth reduce their adverse effect on your health, several key steps should be taken, all of which are covered in this article.
In Closing…
